About Lisa H. Nicholson

Professor Nicholson is spending the 2019-20 academic year as a visiting professor at the DePaul University College of Law, where she is teaching Business Organizations, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Special Topics: SEC & Coin Offerings.

Professor Nicholson joined the faculty at the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in 2000 following seven years of combined securities and commercial litigation experience in New York. She practices law with Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hayes & Handler, LLP as a Litigation Associate after serving as Senior Counsel in the Enforcement Division at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Much of her litigation practice focused on securities regulations and commercial transaction, including issues of investment suitability and fraud.

Professor Nicholson's teaching and research interests continue to concentrate on issues related to corporate law and securities regulation, including the accountability of corporate actors for corporate wrongdoing and the professional responsibility of lawyers in these settings. Her work has appeared in numerous journals, including Indiana Law Journal, Fordham Law Review, Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics, Maryland Law Review, University of Maryland Journal of Business & Technology Law, Michigan State Law Review, and DePaul Business & Commercial Law Journal.

She also has been a Visiting Professor at a number of institutions. During Spring 2005, she was a Visiting Associate Professor at Brooklyn Law School, where she taught Corporations and Securities Regulations. More recently, Professor Nicholson was a Visiting Professor at Boston College Law School, where she taught Commercial Law: Payment Systems and Mergers & Acquisitions during Fall 2007; and the University of Richmond School of Law, where she taught Corporations and Mergers & Acquisitions during Spring 2008.

Professor Nicholson has been involved in a number of community service initiatives, including working as a member of the Jefferson County Chapter of Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, a member of the Economic Justice Committee of Jefferson County Chapter of KFTC and a volunteer and contributor to its Vision Smoketown Project.

She also was invited to become a member of the Police Initiatives WorkGroup, and subsequently became an Implementation Team member for Phase II of "Louisville’s Blueprint for Safe and Healthy Neighborhood Initiative," through the Metro Louisville Office of Safe and Health Neighborhoods.

Professor Nicholson’s teaching, scholarship and community service led to her nomination, and receipt of the University’s Presidential Exemplary Multicultural Teaching Award. This award, one of the University’s highest academic honors, was given in recognition that principles of cultural literacy should be infused into one’s teaching and scholarly research by incorporating multicultural and global perspectives and encouraging the audience to think critically about inclusion and ways to break down barriers that impedes success for anyone who may not meet mainstream societal norms. Professor Nicholson serves on the School of Law’s Dean’s Advisory Committee (Spring 2018 to present) and Economic Welfare Committee (Fall 2018 to present). Professor Nicholson has been a member of the Legal Aid Society Board since 2017 and Board Commissioner of the Louisville Metro Housing Authority since July 2018.
