Abstract
Experiential learning can be an effective practice to improve student engagement, comprehension, and application of course material in the classroom. However, experiential techniques do not go without controversy in criminal justice classes. The current study analyzes undergraduate students’ reactions to three experiential learning activities in an upper-level corrections course: a jail tour, a formerly incarcerated guest speaker, and a documentary on life without parole. This presentation will discuss the specifics on how we implemented experiential learning into the classroom, the results from student reflections, and also discuss with participants how they could implement experiential learning into their own classrooms.
