Abstract

Don't be fooled by the peaceful watercolor on the cover of "That Old Ace in the Hole." Like the story of a painted house on the cover of John Grisham's book of that name, "That Old Ace in the Hole" is a tale of many levels of storm -- the kind that whips the expensive stuff from the places we live faster than we can save up to build them all over again. The frontispiece even bears the inscription Alle molens vangen wind: All mills capture the wind.To accomplish this, Annie Proulx chauffeurs her readers to the grittiest towns in the heartland.
