About Lila McDowell Carlsen

Lila McDowell Carlsen is Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. She specializes in contemporary Latin American literature and culture, with an emphasis on the novels of Mexican and Southern Cone writers. Her work examines how the dystopian and utopian images evident in contemporary narrative dialogue with larger national and global discourses of power, language, and history. Prof. Carlsen has received several research grants from Pepperdine University, including grants from Community Based Research Program, the Seaver Research Council, and the Academic Year Undergraduate Research Initiative. Prof. Carlsen was named Seaver Fellow in International Studies and Languages and has presented her research at conferences in Europe, Latin American, Asia, and in the U.S. Prof. Carlsen coordinates the Hispanic Studies Program at Seaver College, Pepperdine University.
