About Lihua Wang

Dr. Wang is currently involved in a number of research projects that combine her background in bioinorganic
chemistry and analytical chemistry with expertise of other faculty members in biology, biochemistry,
chemistry and chemical engineering. Her research activities cover the following two areas: 1. Synthesis and
characterization of gold nanostructures and metal complexes for potential biomedical applications. 2. Analysis
and study the properties of antioxidants from plant sources.

In order to enhance her students’ motivation to learn, Dr. Wang uses real-life examples to demonstrate the
importance of the course material and its potential impact on the society, which gives the students a broader
view of the value of their education beyond getting good grades and a good job. She also tries is to build their
confidence in their ability to learn by providing them with individualized guidance that reinforces each
student’s strengths and diminish their weaknesses. To help students to have a thorough understanding of the
course material, Dr. Wang strives to provide accurate and detailed explanations of the basic concepts and
theories including the reasoning and thinking behind the development of the concepts and theories. She uses
simple language and simple analogies whenever possible to make abstract and/or complicated concepts and
theories easier to understand. “Practice makes perfect”. She encourages and provides many opportunities
(mandatory homework, graded group problem solving activities in class, daily quizzes, jeopardy games, etc.)
for students to practice their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Dr. Wang encourages students to
learn through reading by assigning pre- and post-class readings and using daily quizzes to test their
comprehension of the material. In addition, she teaches students how to effectively master a large amount of
information by creating their own chapter summaries to organize and connect materials learned from
different parts of the course.
