Random Variables: A Mathematical Definition
(2019)
  • Lester G Telser
Abstract
Random variables lack a mathematical definition on a par with integers, rational numbers, algebraic numbers, etc. The definition herein is based on bivariate multi-valued functions. This appeals to David Hume who analyzes cause and effect as useful ways to understand relations between observations. In case after case Hume denies the existence of perfect connections, those without exceptions, usually described as cases of cause and effect. In effect this essay translates his analysis into a mathematical format that measures how many points correspond to an observation. It includes simple examples from measure theory to illustrate these ideas.
