Abstract

Description: Arab journalism is under siege. The latest figures suggest more Arab reporters and editors are in prison than at any time in modern history (Committee to Protect Journalists, 2017). In most countries of the region, autocratic regimes have regained their iron grip on the media in the wake of the failed Arab Spring and news organizations have been faced with a choice: Close down or revert to the old status as mouthpiece of the regime. Elsewhere, in failed states like Syria, Yemen and Libya, journalists are trapped between warring factions, most of whom want them dead. Thus, a reader who knows the region feels a certain sense of disconnect from reality when paging through Investigative Journalism in the Arab World: Issues and Challenges.
