The ASTA commissioned the writing of this discussion paper to provide a basis for future involvement in the area of professional standards for teachers of science. An overview of the concept of standards; the relationship between standards, quality assurance and accreditation; and the purpose of standards is followed by four case studies of standards development in the US. These summarise the state of the art in the area of professional standards, provide models for the regulation of science teaching and illustrate the issues which arise in linking professional standards to accreditation and career advancement. The paper concludes by outlining future options and suggested priorities for ASTA policy formulation in the areas of quality standards and registration / accreditation standards.
