Abstract
Although skill-focused practice is generally seen as a sine qua non for trainee interpreters, not
all practice is created equal. The importance of reflective, deliberate practice to skill acquisition
and the eventual development of expertise is well-documented in the literature. Educators
cannot, however, assume trainees’ readiness to carry out the critical self-assessment and
reflection that are hallmarks of deliberate practice—rather, educators must be prepared to teach
students how to practice effectively. This panel will explore practical approaches to developing
trainees’ ability to engage in reflective, deliberate practice.

Abstract: Deliberate, reflective practice is an important component of a national experiential
learning program for American Sign Language/English interpreters. This federally funded
program provides support and resources to aid students in effectively making the transition from
school to work. This presentation describes and gives examples of reflective and deliberate
practice components that are integrated into university coursework, as well as components that
participants use independently as they continue their own professional development after
graduation. Results from pre- and post- assessments are also shared, with the intent of
encouraging discussion about the application and evaluation of reflective, deliberate practice.
