Abstract
Many of us have heard the biblical verse “the poor you will always have with you” (Mt 26:11; Mk 14:7; and Jn 12:8) cited to thwart poverty alleviation efforts. This saying attributed to Jesus is often interpreted, according to Liz Theoharis, to mean that poverty is inevitable and therefore our efforts to end it are futile. In this book, Theoharis argues why and how such an interpretation is incorrect. This book is the result of the connections Theoharis has made between her organizing work with poor people to build a social movement to end poverty and her scholarship in biblical studies at Union Theological Seminary.
