About Laura E Katz Rizzo

I am an Assistant Professor and Director of the BFA Program in Dance at Temple University's Esther Boyer College of Music and Dance. My research focuses on the intersections between ballet and popular culture as well as the significant contributions of women to the history of American Ballet. This work disrupts the current meta-narrative focusing on ballet's European, male-dominated evolution, instead looking at dance history as a web of concurrently developing sites of creativity. I also celebrate the populist nature of early American ballet and its close relationship to Follies, Burlesque, Sport and Broadway performance.
