Abstract
Librarianship is a field comprised roughly of ninety percent white librarians. For a person of color this means that with any career tract, be it academic or public librarianship, you will be in the minority. Not only will you be in the minority, it is very likely that you will be the only one. With this singleness, we may be inclined to not bring out whole selves to work. We may practice in code-switching to put our white colleagues at ease and to fit in. What happens to us and our colleagues when we do this? Using myself as subject, I will link how society conditions us to fit into a white heteronormativity and how this affects those in the minority and majority. I will show that the best way for social change in all facets of libraries be it collection development, faculty outreach and student success, is for People of Color to work as “free ass muhfuckas.”
