About Kristen Maisano, OTD, OTR

Dr. Kristen Leigh Maisano, OTD, OTR/L, CPAM has been practicing occupational therapy since 2005. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Master of Science in occupational therapy in 2005 from Misericordia University, Dallas, Pennsylvania. She completed research in the area of home safety for seniors living in independent communities. This research was published in a peer-reviewed journal as well as shared through a professional presentation at a Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association (POTA) annual conference. Kristen became certified to complete physical agent modalities in 2007, focusing on functional electrical stimulation and ultrasound. Kristen received her post-professional doctorate in occupational therapy at Boston University, Boston Massachusetts, in May 2010. During her time at Boston University, Kristen’s research focused on decreasing disruptive behaviors in persons with dementia residing in a long-term care environment. She developed and teaches a graduate class related to decreasing disruptive behaviors in people with dementia. Utilizing the same research, Kristen has presented her findings and programming ideas at the Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland Occupational Therapy Association state conferences, Genesis Rehab Services, and Geisinger Health Systems. In 2011, Kristen joined the Department of Defense as an occupational therapist working with service members diagnosed with mild traumatic brain and posttraumatic stress disorder. Kristen has presented on the topics of traumatic brain injury, post traumatic stress disorder, as well as time efficient and effective documentation at the 2012 Maryland State Occupational Therapy Association annual conference. Kristen transitioned into academia in 2014 as Program Director of Trinity Washington University’s OTA Program. Dr. Maisano joined the OTA faculty of St. Catherine University as an Assistant Professor in August 2016. She maintains a clinical practice at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC working with a variety of diagnoses including CVA and TBI on a PRN basis.
