Abstract
This project analyzes the local food system response to the COVID-19 pandemic as an entry point for understanding how the local food system demonstrates resiliency and vulnerability during acute crisis. Through this lens we gain insight into areas where the local food system excels in supporting a just transition toward resilience, sustainability, and equity, as well as areas where it inhibits or abates progress toward these goals.  We investigate these questions by analyzing changes in household food provisioning during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Massachusetts. Through interviews and photo diary research with 27 community members, we assess how people have adapted their food provisioning and consumption strategies and what role the local food system played in feeding their households. We also talked to people about how they make food provisioning decisions and what values inform their decision-making. By listening to residents speak about their experiences in their own words, we learn about how the local food system serves people and where it falls short. As we deepen this understanding, we gain insight into the potential for the local food system to carry us toward our vision of a just and liberated future for all.

Report presented to Communities Involved in Sustaining Agriculture (CISA). We thank Margaret Christie and the staff at CISA for their contributions to the project. Dr. Cathy Stanton of Tufts University and the students in the fall 2020 section of Anthropology 161 Fieldwork Lab provided a helpful sounding board for our initial research findings. We are grateful to the UMass Amherst College of Social and Behavioral Sciences for supporting the project through the Feldman-Vorwerk Family Undergraduate Research Internship Award, which enabled Rafaella Fabrizi to contribute fully to this research project in summer 2021.
