About Kris Gowen

L. Kris Gowen is a Research Associate at the Regional Research Institute of Human Services at Portland State University’s School of Social Work. Dr. Gowen’s areas of specialization include sexual and relationship health, adolescent development, and gender identity development. Dr. Gowen has 12 years of sexuality education experience, 14 years of research experience in the areas of sexual health and mental health, and 12 years experience in program evaluation. She is responsible for developing and implementing several courses related to sexual health including: Counseling GLBT Clients, Human Sexuality, Women’s Reproductive Health, A Worldview of Sexual Health, and Adolescent Sexuality. In addition, she has presented her work on the influence of the Internet on healthy adolescent sexuality nationally. Through a grant funded by the United Way, Gowen developed and implemented a training for juvenile justice staff on how to provide unbiased services to LGBTQQ youth. Current research projects include assessing how young adults with serious mental health conditions use the internet to access mental health information, evaluating the implementation of comprehensive sexuality education in Oregon schools in accordance to state policy, and evaluating the case management program at a Native American community center.
