The TESOL Encyclopedia of English Language Teaching (2018)

Abstract
New research suggests that while reading strategies instruction is necessary, it may not be sufficient for effective reading comprehension performance. The missing ingredient appears to be prior knowledge, which serves a unique role in the process of reading comprehension. It has been found to mediate or facilitate the impact of reading strategy instruction on reading comprehension performance.
