Vergil Acronym, Acrostic, and Telestic Searchable (Latin) Database
(2021)
  • Keith L. Yoder
Description
This draft Excel file contains three searchable databases of initial and final letters of each consecutive word and verse, compiled from the plain-text versions of the Latin text of Vergil's Aeneid, Eclogues, and Georgics from the Virgil.org website. There are no special Excel features, so the file may be opened with almost any standard open-access spreadsheet software. Auto-filters are enabled in each worksheet, and none of the worksheets are locked or protected, so users should take the usual precautions when editing.

The records for each consecutive verse display strings of the initial and final letters of each word in that verse, with space separators between each letter. The record immediately following the last verse of each book contains the corresponding strings of initial and final letters of the first word, and the initial and final letters of the last word, respectively, of each verse in the book. Thus, the user may easily search for any string of Latin letters, with space separators, as potential acronyms (at the verse level) or as acrostics, mesostics, or telestics (at the book level). For completeness, users may also want to search for reverse letter strings.
