Abstract
Previous research has assumed that Psalm 119’s eight key Torah terms are randomly distributed. This essay presents evidence that demonstrates these terms are distributed intentionally. The distribution is determined by the eight terms’ respective grammatical genders and involves a previously unattested cryptic form of gender-matched parallelism which involves only a selected set of related nouns rather than all nouns in a group of verse-lines. Only after abstracting the non-primary nouns does the remaining underlying gender-based pattern become apparent. Wyatt 1995 documented the same technique involving Psalm 19:8-10’s six Torah terms, without, however, offering an identification or taxonomy for the poetic device. The gender-distribution patterns include examples of inter-strophic duplication, chiasm, perfect and partial gender-transfer, the combination of chiasm with gender-transfer, and examples of consecutive and/or alternating strophes containing equal numbers of f’s and m’s, particularly more than four such consecutive or two alternating strophes. Psalm 119’s eight key Torah terms’ intentional distribution is supported by computer-based statistical analysis.
