I am particularly interested in the social role of the artist in contemporary society, in relation to politics, identity, and critical theory, but always focused on the specifics of artistic media and exhibition practices. I have taught at both art and art history academic departments and in museums including the MoMA, the ICA Boston, and the MFA, Boston. I teach art history and critical theory at UMASS and publish on modern, postwar and contemporary art, especially in Europe. Much of my scholarship and curatorial pracice focuses on the Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-1973) and the collective avant-gardes he co-founded, including Cobra (1948-51) and the Situationist International (1957-72). I am also interested in the role of drawing in global contemporary art, the subject of a second book in progress.
