Abstract

This is a review of Sullivan and Greenberg's essay on Doris Lessing';s novel _The Fifth Child_. The authors are social psychologists and use Terror Management Theory to unpack signs of death anxiety aroused by the disturbing behavior of a family's fifth child. The review tries to relate the novel and the terror management thesis to the panic that haunts imagination when it strays beyond the magic circle of conventional life.
