(RE)VITALIZING INSTRUCTION VIA PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH
English Journal (2021)

Abstract
As educators, we continually seek ways for research to meaningfully involve students. Conducting a student-led participatory action research (PAR) project with my high school English students that focused on classroom instructional strategies revitalized my approach and continues to influence my teaching decisions. A benefit of introducing youth to participatory action research is that it offers them opportunities to actively influence their learning experiences and allows them to “provide their insights into how and for what purposes they want to be educated” (Mirra et al. 4). Participatory action research also provides relevance because it involves student-conducted research with the goal of affecting their schools (Rubin and Jones). Implementing a PAR-based project with students in my classes validated their voices about the instructional strategies implemented in my classroom.
