Abstract
Objective/Intent: To provide insight into a creative Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) designed to complement current curricular APPEs while expanding the experiential program to comply with the Council for Pharmacy Education's (ACPE) 2007 Standards. The South University Applied Drug Information and Scholarly Endeavors APPE is a required rotation for pharmacy students in their final professional year of training. The rotation is strategically placed in the middle of the students' APPEs to advance their patient care skills through collaboration with peers so that lessons learned may be applied in subsequent APPEs. Methods/Process: Students work in teams and individually to complete multiple clinical activities such as patient case evaluation and presentation, drug information question research and response, journal clubs, in-services for peers, and patient panel discussions and interviews. Results/Outcomes: The initial offering of the 1-week APPE was assessed using a student evaluation administered at baseline and at the end of the week. This self assessment evaluation survey was derived from the Pharmacy Care Ability Profile (PCAP) Indicators used by preceptors to evaluate student performance on other APPEs. This tool was used to gauge students' perception of their knowledge base and skill and to determine perceived changes in their abilities upon completing the week's activities. Student self-assessment scores improved in all PCAP indicator categories when compared to baseline. Implications: Offering innovative APPE structures enhance students' clinical knowledge and skill set development while aiding schools of pharmacy in offering more clinical faculty facilitated APPEs.
