Abstract:

At the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM) Replenishment Conference (London, UK, September 5–6), 29 international donors pledged US$3.7 billion to help scale up the Fund’s fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria for the next 2 years. “These pledges form a strong base for continued funding for all the Global Fund’s ongoing programmes and will allow us to further expand our funding for new programmes to fight the three diseases”, Carol Jacobs of the Global Fund explained. The USA pledged $600 million for the next 2 years and the UK doubled its contribution from £51 million to £100 million for 2006 and the same for 2007. Hilary Benn, the UK’s Secretary of State for International Development praised the role of European Union member states as leading donors to the Global Fund and called for additional funding commitments.
