Public Lecture Series - Eugenics in America: History and Ethics

Speakers included the following:

Dr. Phillip Thompson, Director of the St. Thomas Aquinas Institute located at Emory University, spoke on the case of Buck v. Bell, which authorized states to engage in eugenics programs.

Professor Steven Seldon University of Maryland (College of Education), author of Inheriting Shame: The Story of Eugenics and Racism in America.

Victoria F. Nourse, the Burrus-Bascum Professor of Law at the University of Wisconsin Law School, author of In Reckless Hands: Skinner v. Oklahoma and the Near-Triumph of Eugenics, which examines Oklahoma’s attempt to ameliorate crime by mandatory sterilization of repeat-offenders. With this case, the Supreme Court ended forced sterilization as a punitive sentence.
