‘Eng beisammen’: Travel and Human Relationships in Kafka’s Der Verschollene
Journal of the Kafka Society of America (2001)

Abstract
Largely unremarked in the scholarly literature on Kafka's Der Verschollene (Amerika) is the status of same-sex interactions and relationships. This article argues that the fragmentary novel's evident structure emerges around Karl's relationships with other men, always in the context of technologically mediated travel - steamships, railways, automobiles, and the elevator (Aufzug) of the Hotel Occcidental.
