Abstract

This chapter addresses genetic parameters and estimation methods not covered in other chapters. Topics include regression designs for estimating heritability and genetic correlations, inbreeding, heterosis or crossbreeding, and realized heritability estimated from selection expe1iments. These techniques are from classic quantitative genetics, providing information on the genetics of populations using only pedigree and phenotypic information. The primary objective is to demonstrate how SAS software can be used to obtain this information, with minimal genetic background provided. More details are available in excellent texts such as Falconer and Mackay (1996) and Lynch and Walsh (1998).
