Metaphor and emotion in organizational innovation: A qualitative questionnaire design

Abstract
In this presentation, I report on empirical research based on a qualitative questionnaire, which was part of the 3rd Australian Business Leadership Survey. The participating managers were surveyed on organisational culture, climate for innovation, and leadership. The managers also provided a qualitative response, namely a food metaphor for their organisation, and this is the subject of this presentation. Analysis was via the grounded theory method. In Phase 1, I differentiated the upper and lower deciles based upon perceptions of organisational innovation. In Phase 2, I analyzed the food metaphors that aligned with highest and lowest perceptions of organisational innovation. Clear patterns emerged about the visual symbols that reflected the most and least innovative organisations. Phase 3 consisted of formal and informal semi-structured interviews. The important role of emotion emerged during the interview phase. Using qualitative analysis, I ascertained the relationships between perceptions of organisational innovation, emotional response, cognitive response, metaphorical symbolism and sense-making about leadership and organisational effectiveness. I use an explanatory model and story-line to present the findings. Organisational innovation produced a cognitive response and an emotional response. Both responses led to visual imagery which assisted with sense-making about the direction of the organisation. Managers’ emotional responses were found in particular to be hugely powerful in generating desirable leadership outcomes. Finally, the visual imagery identified in the responses was found to augment the cognitive response in its ability to enhance sense-making and leadership. © Copyright Ken Parry, 2007
