About Kelly A. Sherrill Linkous

Kelly Sherrill Linkous, Esq., J.D., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at The George Washington University (GW) in the Educational Administration and Policy Studies (EAPS) program. Dr. Sherrill Linkous coordinates, advises and directs the EAPS doctoral program at all three program locations: VSTC/Ashburn, Alexandria Center, and Hampton Roads Center. She teaches “School Law and Policy,” as well as numerous doctoral-level classes on Leadership and Dissertation writing.
Dr. Sherrill Linkous has received numerous teaching awards at GW. For three consecutive years (2012, 2013 and 2014), Dr. Sherrill Linkous was one of fewer than 10 professors nominated for the university-wide Honey S. Nashman “Spark-a-Life” Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award, and she was the sole GSEHD nominee in 2012 and 2014. In 2012, Dr. Sherrill Linkous was awarded the Dean’s Outstanding GSEHD Faculty Award. And in 2013, Dr. Sherrill Linkous was nominated for the prestigious university-wide Bender Outstanding Teaching Award.
Prior to joining GW as a faculty member, Dr. Sherrill Linkous practiced education law in Georgia and Virginia, where her affiliated firms represented (collectively) five large, metro-Atlanta school districts, many smaller, rural Georgia school districts, and over 80 of Virginia’s school districts, including Loudoun County Public Schools. Dr. Sherrill Linkous’ legal expertise includes special education law, First Amendment law, employment law, and other areas of law applicable and relevant to public schools. Dr. Sherrill Linkous obtained her J.D. from GW in 2001 and her Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy from the University of Georgia in 2009. She maintains her license to practice law in Virginia and Georgia, and continues to provide pro bono legal representation for education law matters on a case-by-case basis. She is also an active member of the Education Law Association and the Council for Exceptional Children.
Dr. Sherrill Linkous serves on the Board of Trustees for the Children’s Guild DC Public Charter School, which specializes in serving children with autism and severe emotional and behavioral disabilities. She provides special education legal training to various public school divisions, including the DCPS Nonpublic Special Education Unit of OSSE. Dr. Sherrill Linkous is also an Editorial Board member of the Education Law and Policy Review, a peer-reviewed journal. Additionally, she serves as an Adoption Coordinator for the Lab Rescue of the L.R.C.P. Labrador Retriever rescue organization, where she and her husband also provide foster and medical care for rescued Labrador Retrievers. They share their home with their new daughter and four rescued dogs.
