Abstract
On Aug. 18, 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified by Tennessee, the 36th state needed for it to become law. On Aug. 26, it was certified by U.S. Secretary of State, Bainbridge Colby, and on Sept. 14, 1920, Connecticut approved the legislation. Amid the debate and legal challenges over the decision to ratify in Tennessee, Connecticut’s approval of the women’s suffrage legislation, becoming the 37th state to adopt the amendment, was crucial in solidifying it as law.
