Abstract
The fact that Luke became a Christian quite a while after Jesus’ time on earth raises an intriguing question. What led this brand-new Gentile Christian to undertake a project of writing the story of someone he had never met? And how and where did he gather all the information about Jesus? These are “mystery” questions that demand answers and draw us into his Gospel account. It takes an extraordinary person with an extraordinary quest for adventure and energized by the Holy Spirit to undertake such a project.

Luke was extraordinary in more ways than one. His writing portrays an educated and organized mind, sequential thinking, a passion for history, and a talent for research. A sense of adventure shows not only in his tackling the complex task of writing the story of Jesus, but also in his love of travel, especially his exhilaration with sea travel.

My reading and study of Luke has led me to some excellent and comprehensive commentaries on his gospel. Biblical scholars have analyzed his writing, interpreted his many parables, and plumbed his theology both in the gospel story and in Acts. Is there anything more to be said?

Yes! My background is not academic, but I like to approach the text of Luke with imagination and surprise. I want to tell Luke’s story like it is, in a conversational style, bordering on the colloquial at times. I’d like you to hear it that way. I think you will stop sometimes and want to ask questions like:  How and where did Luke discover some of these stories? Who were the eyewitnesses that he found and interviewed? But most of all, what can I learn from these Spirit-guided accounts?
