Abstract

The female athlete triad (triad) is a condition characterized by low energy availability ([dietary energy intake – exercise energy expenditure] / kg lean body mass), menstrual irregularity, and impaired bone health. The components of the triad are included in the condition termed relative energy deficiency in sport, which includes additional aspects of female and male athletes’ physical and mental health that may be affected by low energy availability. The triad can have lasting negative effects such as increased risk for stress fracture. Triad components are prevalent among female high school athletes in a variety of sports. However, triad knowledge among this age group is low; 3 studies reported that athletes correctly answered <50% of triad knowledge questions. Previous educational interventions were successful in improving triad knowledge among female high school and collegiate track and field athletes and perceived susceptibility to the triad among adolescent preprofessional dancers. However, because of the multisession nature of the interventions, missing ≥ 1 educational sessions decreased learning for athletes. The purpose of the current study was to assess changes in triad knowledge among female high school athletes after participation in a brief (10-minute) triad educational intervention.
