About Kathryn M Kalinak

Kathryn Kalinak is Professor of English and Film Studies. Recent courses taught at RIC include The Hollywood Film Score, The Global Film Score, Disney Discourse, The Westerns of John Ford, and The Frontier in the American Cultural Imagination. She has contributed to numerous film journals, handbooks, encyclopedias, and anthologies and is the author of SETTLING THE SCORE: MUSIC AND THE CLASSICAL HOLLYWOOD FILM (University of Wisconsin Press, 1992); HOW THE WEST WAS SUNG: MUSIC IN THE WESTERNS OF JOHN FORD (University of California Press, 2007); and FILM MUSIC: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION (Oxford University Press, 2010). She edited the anthology MUSIC IN THE WESTERN: NOTES FROM THE FRONTIER for which she also wrote the introduction and an individual chapter (Routledge, 2011). In 2011 she was named the Margaret Tucker Thorp Professor. Her next project is an edited anthology in the Rutgers University Press/Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ten volume series, BEHIND THE SILVER SCREEN. She will be editing, introducing, and writing a chapter for Volume 8: Sound.
