Young Children
(2002)
Abstract
Article examines what children understand as they play and participate in different kinds of literacy activities. Considers different ways of "knowing" such as knowing how, knowing that, and knowing when, through observation of children and descriptions of examples of their literacy play. Authors offer suggestions for promoting early literacy opportunities in play by providing physical and social supports that embed reading and writing in play situations.
