Emotions, affective neuroscience, and changing one's mind
The Palgrave Handbook of Learning for Transformation (2023)

Abstract
In light of new neuroscientific discoveries, we focus first on the essential
roles of emotions and the body-brain in transformative learning, and
then briefly review findings of affective neuroscience with respect to the
influence of emotions on thinking, learning, and decision-making. Three
student vignettes illustrate how caring attention to the emotional states
of adult learners can encourage learning that transforms. Finally, for adult
educators seeking to apply the emerging science of emotion in their
transformative practices, we feature John Heron’s model of facilitating
learning, which embodies key principles of affective neuroscience.
