Mathematics anxiety has been defined as “a state of discomfort that occurs in response to situations involving mathematical tasks that are perceived as threatening to self-esteem” (Trujillo and Hadfield 1999, p. 173). Teachers who experience instances of mathematics anxiety may feel nervous and worried that they may not be able to fully support their students as they guide them through a particular mathematical concept. Teachers may worry their students will ask a question they find difficult to answer or are unsure of how to answer. This may lead to even greater feelings of mathematics anxiety.
