Abstract
This report summarise the evidence-base for the redesign of the Victorian Department’s Parent Opinion Survey – an annual paper-based census of a random selection of parents and caregivers of students in Years 5 to 12 in Government schools, in use over the last decade. The evidence comprises findings of a comprehensive literature review, which current identified trends, relevant to the Victorian schooling context, and high quality in terms of design and impact. These insights, were augmented with psychometric data analyses of responses to the previous version of the survey, along with feedback from stakeholder consultations to result in the new parent survey. The re-designed survey has been extended to include the views of parents with students in the junior primary years with strong regard to using straightforward expression that readily translates into the 25 identified languages.
