About Katherine R. Tuttle, MD, FASN, FACP, FNKF

With over 25 years of experience in clinical and translational research, I am well-prepared to serve as a faculty mentor for the T32 training grant in Nephrology at the University of Washington. At Providence Health Care (PHC) I serve as Executive DirectorforResearch, and at University of Washington, I am the Regional Co-Principal Investigator (PI) for the Institute of Translational Health Sciences, clinical Professor of Medicine in Nephrology, and Investigator at the Kidney Research Institute. I have led the research program at PHC for 23 years and successfully conducted numerous research projects with reliable deliverables including high-impact publications and new grants. I have coordinated teams consisting of investigators, trainees (early career scientists, fellows, and graduate students), collaborators and consultants, and research staff. I understand the necessity of regular ongoing communication among team members to achieve realistic plans, timelines, and budgets. My scientific contributions are described in Section C. The particular impact of my work on knowledge of diabetic kidney disease was highlighted at the American Diabetes Association’s 75th Scientific Sessions, (www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXLL8ULb8Tc&list=PL9CZabk3nD4HqrFPClhzvAMG1f80tllsR&index=13).

I have been a lead or study-wide PI for many investigations along with national and international leadership roles in Nephrology research (e.g. steering committees, clinical management and ancillary study committees, data safety monitoring boards). I have mentored 26 trainees inclusive of post-doctoral fellows, sabbatical scientists (national and international), K-Award scholars, and doctoral candidates. Under this tutelage, they consistently gained a number of essential skills that prepared them well for transition to independent scientific and clinical careers. I meet with my trainees at least weekly to review their progress, trouble-shoot experiments and analyses, and provide guidance. I have a strong track record of faithfully overseeing their training experiences to completion. I commit myself to progressive mentorship for T32-supported fellows who join our research team. They will meet all training requirements during the period of this award.
