Dr. Katherine Campbell, Assistant Professor of Interprofessional Education (IPE), is awarded $12,000 by the GHR Innovative Scholarship Grant Program to investigate current HLHS families’ perceptions of the interprofessional care team and HLHS treatment timeline with the goal of identifying any misconceptions or points of confusion and improving transparency of both the healthcare team and treatment for HLHS parents. Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped and nonfunctional, as a result children born with HLHS do not survive more than a few hours or days after birth without pharmacological and surgical intervention. The knowledge gained from this project aims to improve the clinical care teams’ ability to anticipate and accommodate patients and family needs. The aim of this project will be to improve communication between parents and the HLHS care team in order to increase parents’ sense of control over, clarity of, and confidence in their child’s medical care.
