The Rise of FDI Protectionism
A New Investment Paradigm (2009)
  • Karl P. Sauvant, Columbia University
Abstract
The past twenty years have seen an impressive trend toward making the investment climate more welcoming for foreign direct investment through investment facilitation. However, there are signs that the pendulum is swinging back. The reasons for these changes include rising concerns about national security and national interest, growing suspicion surrounding the success of new emerging markets and the desire of developing countries to benefit as much as possible from FDI in natural resources. The investment regime must be re-examined so that it takes into consideration the needs of all stakeholders.
