Do Not Neglect Establishment Trade: The China-US Example

Abstract
English Abstract: This Perspective suggests that, to assess the competitiveness of a country’s firms, one needs not only to look at exports, but also the sales of their foreign affiliates (“establishment trade”). It exemplifies this for the China-US trade relationship and balance-of-payments. Taking such a holistic approach leads to a different picture, with a clear policy implication. 

Chinese Abstract: 本文认为在衡量一国企业的竞争力时,不仅要考虑企业的出口能力,同时还要考虑该国企业海外子公司的销售能力。中美之间的贸易关系是典型的例证。
