Connecting Research to Teaching: Enhancing Meaning in Mathematics: Drawing on What Students Know about the Physical World
Mathematics Teacher (2005)
  • Karen A. Marrongelle, Portland State University
Abstract
The study explores the use of content from other disciplines to make sense of mathematical concepts, in the context of an integrated calculus and physics class. The authors present a lesson in which students analyze the movement of a cart in terms of velocity, time and rate of change. Students' use of physics lead to a deeper understanding of calculus concepts.
