About Mahn-Hee Kang

Dr. Mahn-Hee Kang is currently a Professor of Musicology at Korea Baptist Theological University / Seminary. He has also served as the Dean of Library and Information Affairs from 2004 to 2006. At the same time, he is holding a Visiting Archivist position at the Special and Digital Collections, Tampa Library, at the University of South Florida. Before he was invited to the Baptist Theological Seminary to develop a graduate program in Church Music, he was an Assistant Professor of Musicology in the Department of Music and Music Education at Hartwick College (Oneonta, New York) from 1994 to 2001.
Dr. Kang earned his Ph.D. degree in Musicology from The Ohio State University in 1992, two Masters degrees (music history and literature in 1985 and piano performance in 1983) from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and a Bachelor’s degree from Kyunghee University of Seoul in Korea (piano performance and music education) in 1981. In addition, he attended the Methodist Theological School in Ohio (Delaware, Ohio) for a certificate from 1993 to 1994. He received a Masters degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida in May 2008.
Dr. Kang was trained as a music cataloger at the Morris Library in Southern Illinois University at Carbondale under the leading authority in music cataloging, Dr. Richard B. Wursten. This experience led him to develop his research skills and to get involved with libraries throughout his graduate studies and teaching career. He has served as a knowledgeable and influential library committee member and music liaison at Hartwick College and Korea Baptist Theological Seminary. He has been involved with bibliographical and research method instructions for many years, and published a book, Research Methods for seminary students in 2005. He has also been serving as a panel examiner for evaluating research proposals and distributing grants for the Korea Research Foundation in Korea.
Since he received the “Teaching Excellence Award” (Alumni and Friends Award) from The Ohio State University in 1991, Dr. Kang has been a successful and effective teacher in the field of musicology. As a scholar, he published numerous articles and books in the field of source studies. Also, he has served as a music editor at The United Methodist Publishing House from 1998 to 2001, and he edited the United Methodist Korean-English Hymnal, Come, Let Us Worship. As a winner of the 2010 Research Abroad Program sponsored by the Korea Research Foundation, Dr. Kang has conducted his own research and has been involved in a reprocessing project of The Robert Helps Collections in the Special & Digital Collections, University of South Florida.
