Abstract

Mechanistic models for process specific energy and surface temperature profile of the work material lateral to the tool motion were investigated in this study. Experiments were conducted with a robotic friction stir welding machine on A1-F357 investment cast plates to measure the axial force, spindle torque and surface temperature to determine the mechanistic model parameters. The results obtained show that the specific energy correlates linearly with the surface temperature of the work material. Also, the temperature mechanistic model based on Rosenthal's moving line source equations can estimate the surface temperature very well.
