Abstract

Leaders like Theodulf and Alcuin also assumed the role of spiritual, somewhat paternal, mentors to eager, capable women, including noble religious, as well as sovereign queens and princesses, who were becoming increasingly prohibited by the throne from directing their own spiritual programmes.
