Using Protocols to Guide Community-Based Research: A Personal Journey
The Community-Based PhD : Complexities and Triumphs of Conducting CBPR (2022)

Abstract
Legacies of power dynamics and distrust of academia from communities can arise when attempting to conduct research (Ladson-Billings 2000). Indigenous scholar Linda Tuhiwai Smith (1999, 7) writes, “Research is one of the ways in which the underlying code of imperialism and colonialism is both regulated and realized.” To shift this paradigm, we must explore more ethical and human ways to engage in research in and out of the academy (Paris and Winn 2014). I believe this starts with graduate programs and whether graduate students are encouraged to engage in participatory research practices.
