Abstract

From early on, travel was a vehicle that served Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara well in his ideological journey towards social consciousness, socialism, and societal change. This essay proposes a mapping of the intertwined relationship between transformative travel, ideology, and the Cuban Revolution in Guevara's Reminiscences of the Cuban Revolutionary War (1963). This travelogue is the terminus of the author's initial journey towards ideological consciousness, as well as where Guevara's construct of the ‘New Man’ begins to surface. Given this focus, Reminiscences is also the foundational text that reflects Che's goal of creating an authentic post-capitalist culture after the triumph of the Revolution.
