The cover image on an assigned text is often the first message American students receive about cultural anthropology. Drawing upon 47 introductory texts published between 2001 and 2007, our team of students and professor employed content, semiotic, and critical discourse analysis, as well as student focus groups and student survey information, to discover messages projected to and received by students. We discuss our findings in terms of pedagogy and contemporary concerns of cultural anthropology.
