We present the findings of a community-based health needs and resources assessment of the Latino population in Alabama. Acknowledging the paucity of information on the Latino population in the southeastern United States, SAMHSA funded Proyecto Salud Para Todos (Project Health for All) was an assessment of the overall health care needs and resources related to HIV and substance abuse prevention and primary health care access for young adult Latinos in the Greater Birmingham metropolitan area. Using the results of Proyecto Salud Para Todos we will demonstrate: 1) the usefulness of a community-based assessment methodology, 2) key data findings in regards to substance abuse, HIV and primary health care access for Latino adults in Alabama, and 3) utilization of results in setting program and policy priorities for improving the health of the Latino population. As such we will review the demographic and health status of the Latino population in the southeastern United States, present an overview of Proyecto Salud Para Todos data collection methodology, illustrate project data results, and discuss the resulting strategic community plan for improving the health of Alabama Latinos.
