About Joseph Woelfel

Joseph A. Woelfel '70, '72, '78, BS, MS, PhD, RPh, FASCP earned his bachelor of science in pharmacy in 1970, master of science in pharmacy in 1972 and his doctor of philosophy in clinical pharmacy in 1978 from University of the Pacific. Dr. Woelfel teaches geriatrics and pharmacy management, oversees 200 students working in skilled nursing facilities, coordinates student pharmaceutical care experiences and manages the on-campus patient care clinics. Dr. Woelfel maintains an independent health care consultant practice. He has also served as a clinical practitioner with the Lodi Integrative Wellness Center, a collaborative of traditional and complementary medicine and wellness.

Dr. Woelfel is the former Director of Pharmacy Services and Patient Safety Officer at Lodi Memorial Hospital Association, where he was responsible for developing, implementing and managing the subacute and long-term care pharmacy services. He was also an assistant editor with the Therapeutic Research Center, writing for the Pharmacist's Letter/Prescriber's Letter and the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. He has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed articles and is a member of several community health boards. He also serves as a consultant for legal firms and health care providers. He was an in-kind contributor to the Healthier San Joaquin County Assessment in 2008 and 2010.

His professional affiliations include membership in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the American Pharmacists Association, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP), the American Public Health Association, the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA). He serves on the Senior Care Pharmacist Task Force for the ASCP. He is the Director of the CPhA Long-term Care Academy. He also represents the pharmacy profession as the Pharmacy Chairperson of the Western Alliance of Health Care Resources and is on their Board of Directors.

Actively involved in the community, he is on the Board of Directors for the United Way of San Joaquin County and Lodi Area Community Council. He is also involved with San Joaquin Medical Association's Community Health Leadership Council, the Breastfeeding Coalition of San Joaquin County, the Keep Lodi Healthy Committee and the Home Health Advisory Committee.

Dr. Woelfel's personal experiences helping his parents, godmother and aunt as they aged and needed increasing levels of care strengthened his commitment to improving patient care. He is dedicated to helping individuals and their families get the information and resources they need to achieve the best possible quality of life. The individual who has influenced him most in his career is Claude Busick, RPh who was the first Chief Pharmacist at St. Joseph's Medical Center and a former President of the International Pharmacy Federation and a former Councilmember of the City of Stockton. Outside the realm of pharmacy he enjoys woodworking and photography, as well as playing tennis.
