Abstract
Murder gives us an X-ray of the inner core of human nature. It lays bare the things that
matter most to humans everywhere—the necessities of survival, the attainment of status,
the defense of honor, the acquisition of desirable partners, the loyalty of our lovers, the
bonding of our allies, the vanquishing of our enemies, the protection of our children, and
the successes of the carriers of our genetic cargo. These are the things that we humans and
